My life and the world of crystals. Ian Robinson and Sally Robinson The study of virus structure and function: a personal history. Michael G Rossmann 2014

Abstract. Crystallography grew up empirically as a branch of mineralogy. It was supported by laws deduced from observations, such as the law of constancy of interfacial angles and the law of rational intercepts, and involved mainly the recognition, description, and classification of naturally occurring crystal species, that is, it was a study of the morphology, or external form, of crystals. Deep insights into the chemical nature of surface free energy are important to achieve a rational design of solid materials with desired morphologies and functionalities such as electronic properties and catalytic performances.

Our flow-enhanced crystallization model demonstrates that MatEx-induced polymer stretch leads to a higher nucleation density and greater space filling in the weld regions between deposited filaments. Consequently, after Interesting enough, the science of crystal growth has its root in the same 17th Century as structural crystallography started. We shall trace in this article how the science of crystal growth and the understanding on forms of crystals has developed since the 17th Century. For crystal growth and morphology of inorganic matter of simple The molecular mechanisms underlying the fact that a crystal can take a variety of external forms is something we have come to understand only in the last few decades. This is due to recent developments in theoretical and experimental investigations of crystal growth mechanisms.

In this article, we describe some recent advances in crystal morphology engineering, with a special focus on a new mechanistic model for spiral growth. The molecular modeling techniques are then applied to investigate the changes in the morphology of taurine which caused by the presence of sodium sulfate. Through molecular dynamic simulations, the interaction energy of sodium sulfate with taurine crystal faces are obviously larger than those of taurine and these differences on the (011) and (11‐1) are more significant than those on (021 2010-12-18 10 Crystal Morphology and Symmetry The symmetry of a crystal is the geometrical relationship between its faces and edges. Crystal symmetry is a reflection of internal atomic symmetry. If a crystal has symmetry, the symmetry is common to all of its properties.
